Interesting post Artie. As someone who has also subscribed to the Studs Terkel model of chatting up strangers, I find it disheartening to lose you from our ranks. Just this Friday, I was in an airport bar making conversation with a very interesting guy who happens to work for a great startup logistics firm in San Francisco. We chatted as foodies do about best bets for restaurants on our respective cities.
What is the harm really? Did you have a bad experience? I can tell you Columbus seems to be an easier city to play this game than most others.
Have a great week!

But Artie, what if, like, you're sitting at a tram stop in Memphis? :-)

This makes me sad. And a little "schooled". I've always loved meeting strangers and sharing a bit of our earthly togetherness. Do I have to stop, too?
