This is called "Making Meaning." Some people search around for some pre-destined purpose and it's simply not there to be found. You have to make meaning in your life by understanding your values (religious or otherwise) and building the actions in your life (short term and long term) around those values. This question of "why" is wonderful, so long as it is (1) properly scoped and (2) translated into actions that actually promote the "why".
